Trading: Gotta Catch 'Em All!!

As I have said before, the babywearing community is a lovely one. It is really about fostering relationships. These relationships are founded on common interests and ideals, it is handy to be able to run your mouth off to someone who actually cares. Another lucky thing about knowing people with common interests and collections, is that they have collections just like you. So from time to time you will want to know a bit more about a wrap someone else has. This is where trading happens and it is so fun!

There are a few ways trading wraps occurs and I have experienced some of them.

Right now I am doing a temporary trade with a local Mum. We both have Didymos Pfau wraps, but from different years. So we are swapping to see the difference between them. (A post on the comparisons to come!)
In this kind of trade, you both swap something for a short period of time, to get the feel of the wrap. Sometimes they are similar wraps, but sometimes completely different.

Then there is just straight up borrowing wraps, I had the privilege of borrowing a friend's Oscha Satori recently. I had this beauty for a week and this just fueled the fire of my love for it!
This kind of trading comes from the kindness of a persons heart, because there really is nothing in it for the lender.

Another kind of trading is more permanent, this is where you actually trade wraps FOR GOOD! I have done a few trades, I have always done it when I have wanted to mix up my collection a bit. There finically is less on the line, it isn't buying a whole new wrap.
Sometimes you see these kinds of trades where one person trades their lesser value wrap for a more expensive one, then that person would add extra money to make up the difference.

Another type of trade, that I have yet to try, is a "traveling wrap". This is where someone sends their wrap around the community or  even the world. In this scenario the people involved pay the shipping costs. Someone might do this for several reasons: to let people try a wrap they might otherwise not get to or maybe they need help breaking it in. Whatever the reason, it is a wonderful community building exercise.

No matter the type of trade that you are doing, one thing is for sure, you get to try new things. I really like trades for this reason, I have tried 6 or 7 different wraps that I might have not had a chance to because of trades. It helps narrow down what you like in a wrap, and can cure wrap lust sometimes (or make it worse).

*And yes that is a Pokemon reference in the title, wraps and trading cards are almost exactly the same

  1. I like to lend out wraps to people who are just learning about wovens - that way they can figure out how awesome it is without being intimidated by a price tag!
